Błonia Krakowskie – a green oasis in the heart of the city

In the very heart of Krakow lies a 48-hectare green meadow known as Błonia – a rarely found urban oasis where history, culture, and nature intertwine. Once a pasture for cows and horses, today Błonia is a beloved place for walking, picnics, sports, and a variety of public events.

History of Błonia

The history of Błonia stretches back many centuries. In the 14th century, the city of Krakow officially took over this area after disputes with the Norbertine nuns from Zwierzyniec. For centuries, the meadow primarily served as pasture – a key resource for the city’s livestock.

Over time, Błonia also became the site of important events: the first airplane flight in Krakow in 1894, the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald in 1910, and ceremonial gatherings of the Polish Legions. It was here that Pope John Paul II celebrated masses, attracting hundreds of thousands of faithful.

Walking on Błonia today, one can still feel their layered history. Tree-lined avenues, vast lawns, and picturesque views visually connect the meadow with the towers of Krakow’s Old Town, Wolski Forest, and the distant Kościuszko Mound.
