Bolimów Forest & Rawka River – A Hidden Nature Escape Near Warsaw

Discover ancient forests, the wild Rawka River, scenic trails and historic estates in one of the most beautiful natural regions near Warsaw.

Hidden between Warsaw and Łódź, Bolimów Forest and the Rawka River offer one of central Poland’s most surprising outdoor escapes. Ancient woodlands, wild river valleys, hidden clearings and historic estates create a landscape where nature and history intertwine at every turn.

Part of the Bolimów Landscape Park, this protected area covers more than 23,000 hectares and preserves one of the largest forest complexes in central Poland. Whether you're looking for kayaking, hiking, wildlife, or peaceful countryside scenery, the region offers far more than most visitors expect.

Following the Rawka River

The heart of the park is the Rawka River, one of Poland's last naturally flowing lowland rivers. Unlike many rivers that were straightened over the centuries, the Rawka still follows its original course, creating meanders, wetlands and rich habitats for wildlife.

Its scenic banks attract hikers, cyclists and kayakers, while wooden footbridges and quiet riverside clearings provide perfect spots to slow down and enjoy the landscape. The river is particularly popular among kayakers, who consider Rawka one of the most beautiful and accessible rivers for paddling in central Poland.

Along its course, visitors will discover hidden beaches, picturesque bends and viewpoints overlooking the valley. Places such as Oberwanka and the high riverbanks above Rawka offer some of the most photogenic scenery in the entire park.

The river is also one of the best places in the region to observe nature. Beavers, herons, kingfishers and countless other species thrive along its untouched banks.

Hidden Clearings, Beavers and Forest Trails

Deep within the forest lie the unique Budnik Clearings (Polany Budników) — open meadows surrounded by dense woodland. These historic clearings were once home to forest workers who produced charcoal and tar while living far from nearby villages.

Another fascinating stop is the Rokita Nature Reserve, one of the park's most interesting natural areas. Wooden footbridges cross marshy sections of the forest, while beaver activity has transformed parts of the landscape into a mosaic of ponds, wetlands and flooded woodland.

Nearby, visitors can also discover Polana Siwica, one of the largest and most picturesque clearings in the forest. Surrounded by towering trees, it offers a peaceful place to rest and experience the quieter side of the park.

Together, these areas reveal a wilder and less explored side of Mazovia that many visitors never discover.

Palaces, Gardens and Hidden History

One of the greatest advantages of the region is the variety of attractions surrounding the forest.

Just beyond the woodland stands the magnificent Nieborów Palace, one of Poland's finest Baroque residences. Its beautifully preserved interiors and formal gardens provide a fascinating contrast to the untamed landscapes of the park.

Nearby, Arkadia Romantic Park transports visitors into a world of classical temples, artificial ruins, ponds and picturesque pathways inspired by 18th-century landscape design. Together, Nieborów and Arkadia form one of the most remarkable cultural complexes in central Poland.

History enthusiasts may also visit Joachimów-Mogiły, a military cemetery hidden among the trees, as well as traces of World War I that remain scattered throughout the region. These reminders of the past add another layer to a landscape already rich in natural and cultural heritage.

A Different Side of Mazovia

While many visitors focus on Warsaw, Bolimów Landscape Park reveals a completely different face of central Poland. Here, wild rivers, ancient forests, historic estates and hidden clearings create a landscape that feels untouched by time.

Whether you come for kayaking on the Rawka, hiking through forest trails, wildlife observation or a visit to Nieborów and Arkadia, the region offers one of the most diverse and rewarding escapes near the capital. It is a place where nature, history and culture meet far away from the crowds.
