Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw – A Historic Green Oasis
Explore a peaceful garden with seasonal flowers, greenhouses and rare plants in the heart of Warsaw.
Step into the Ogród Botaniczny Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego — a historic botanical garden located in the heart of Warsaw, near Łazienki Królewskie. It’s one of the oldest botanical gardens in Poland, combining scientific heritage with a unique natural setting. Founded in 1818, it remains part of the University of Warsaw and today functions as both a research space and a public attraction, offering a rare chance to experience biodiversity in the middle of the city.
A living collection of plants and history
Originally created for academic purposes, the garden has evolved into a carefully curated space showcasing rare and diverse plant species, while continuing its role in research and conservation. Visitors can explore themed sections such as alpine plants, ornamental flowers, and medicinal herbs, with the landscape constantly shifting throughout the seasons and offering a slightly different experience each time.
Key highlights of the garden include:
- diverse collections of native and exotic plants
- rose garden and medicinal plant section
Space and atmosphere
The garden is divided into thoughtfully designed zones that reflect different ecosystems, connected by paths leading through shaded alleys, open spaces, and quieter corners. Despite its central location, it feels calm and removed from the city's pace, making it ideal for slow walks, photography, or simply spending time surrounded by greenery.
Every few years, however, the garden becomes the stage for something completely unexpected. Inside the tropical greenhouse, the titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), known as the “corpse flower,” begins its rare bloom — a short-lived and striking event that attracts visitors from across the city. The plant can reach over 2–3 meters in height and releases an intense smell resembling rotting flesh, designed to attract pollinating insects. What makes it even more unusual is its ability to generate heat, intensifying the scent and mimicking natural decomposition, turning a botanical curiosity into a truly unforgettable experience.
