Getting Around Kraków – Transport & Travel Apps

Learn how to move around Kraków easily using public transport, walking routes, and essential apps that help tourists navigate the city smoothly.

Step into a city that is compact, walkable and surprisingly easy to navigate. Kraków offers one of the most tourist-friendly transport systems in Central Europe, combining historic streets, an efficient tram network and convenient digital tools that help visitors move around with ease.

Whether you are exploring the Old Town, heading to Kazimierz, or visiting districts such as Podgórze or Nowa Huta, you usually do not need a car. Most attractions are located close to each other, and reliable public transport connects the rest of the city.

Public transport in Kraków

Kraków’s public transport system is based mainly on trams and buses, which operate from early morning until late evening, with night routes running after midnight. Trams are usually the fastest way to travel through central districts, while buses provide connections to outer areas and nearby recreational spots.

Tickets in Kraków are time-based, which means that one ticket allows you to change between trams and buses as long as the time limit has not expired. This system makes travelling across the city simple and flexible for visitors.

The most useful ticket options for tourists include:

  • 20-minute tickets for short journeys within the centre
  • 60 or 90-minute tickets for longer routes across the city
  • 24h, 48h or 72h passes convenient for sightseeing
  • 7-day passes for visitors staying longer in Kraków

Moving around the city

The historic centre of Kraków is best explored on foot. Major attractions such as the Main Market Square, Wawel Castle, Kazimierz, and Planty Park are all located within walking distance of one another.

For longer distances, trams provide fast connections across the city, while scenic cycling routes run along the Vistula Boulevards and through nearby parks. These options make it easy to explore Kraków without relying on a car.

Useful information for visitors

Key information for planning your travel around the city:

  • Public transport: trams and buses operate across the entire city with night lines after midnight
  • Tickets: available in mobile apps, ticket machines at stops and sometimes onboard vehicles
  • Navigation apps: tools such as Jakdojade and Google Maps help plan routes in real time
  • Airport connection: trains and buses connect Kraków Airport with the Main Station in about 20 minutes

Drivers should be aware that Kraków introduced a Clean Transport Zone (Strefa Czystego Transportu) to improve air quality. The zone covers much of the city, including central districts, and only vehicles meeting certain emission standards are allowed to enter.

In general:

  • petrol cars must meet Euro 4 standard or newer
  • diesel cars must meet Euro 6 standard or newer

If a vehicle does not meet these standards, it is still possible to pay a special access fee allowing entry to the zone for a limited period. Vehicles with foreign registration plates must also register in the city system before entering the zone.

The registration and payment process can be completed online through the official city system for the Clean Transport Zone on the Kraków public transport authority website (ZTP Kraków).

Many visitors still choose to park outside central districts and continue using public transport or walking.

Why Kraków is easy to explore

Kraków’s compact layout and efficient transport network make it one of the easiest cities in Central Europe to navigate. Historic districts are located close together, while trams and buses connect the rest of the city quickly and reliably.

Whether you walk through medieval streets, ride a tram across the city or cycle along the Vistula River, getting around Kraków is simple and becomes part of the experience of discovering the city.
