At just 50 metres above sea level, Gradowa Hill became one of the most strategically important places in Gdańsk. For centuries, whoever controlled this hill could watch over the city and defend one of the Baltic's greatest trading ports. Today, it combines centuries-old fortifications, interactive exhibitions and one of the finest panoramic views in Gdańsk.

From Lookout to Fortress

Long before visitors came here for the scenery, Gradowa Hill served as a key defensive position. During the 17th century, Gdańsk transformed the hill into an extensive fortress system designed to protect the city from attack. Bastions, earthworks, defensive walls and military buildings gradually covered the hillside, adapting over time as military technology evolved.

Although the fortress eventually lost its military role, much of this historic landscape has survived and can still be explored today.

Where History Meets Science

Today, Gradowa Hill is home to Hevelianum, an educational and cultural centre named after the renowned Gdańsk astronomer Johannes Hevelius.

Rather than a traditional museum, Hevelianum invites visitors to explore interactive exhibitions on astronomy, engineering, mathematics, history and natural sciences. Many of them are housed inside restored military buildings, creating a unique blend of historic architecture and modern learning.

Look for the preserved bastions, brick fortifications and underground passages that reveal how the hill once protected Gdańsk.

One of the Best Views in Gdańsk

The panoramic terrace is one of the hill's biggest attractions. From the summit, visitors can admire the rooftops of the Old Town, the Main Railway Station, the European Solidarity Centre, the historic shipyards, the Motława River and, on clear days, even the waters of the Bay of Gdańsk.

It's also one of the city's favourite spots for watching the sunset.
