Kazimierz – Kraków Historic Jewish Quarter
A former Jewish district filled with narrow streets, synagogues, art galleries and local eateries - a place where history meets culture, just steps from the Old Town.
Step into one of Kraków’s most atmospheric districts — Kazimierz, where centuries of history blend with modern culture and everyday life. Once an independent town and later the center of Jewish life in Poland, the district today is filled with historic streets, synagogues, cafés and creative spaces.
Just a short walk from the Main Market Square, Kazimierz offers a completely different side of the city. Old tenement houses, hidden courtyards and historic monuments stand beside galleries, murals and lively restaurants that shape the district’s unique character.
A historic center of Jewish culture
Kazimierz was founded in 1335 by King Casimir the Great as a separate town located just outside medieval Kraków. In the 15th century, a large Jewish community settled here, turning the district into one of the most important centers of Jewish religious and cultural life in Europe.
The heart of the neighborhood was Szeroka Street, surrounded by synagogues, prayer houses and markets. Many historic buildings from that period still exist today, creating one of the most significant collections of Jewish heritage sites in Central Europe.
Key historic landmarks of Kazimierz include:
- the Old Synagogue, one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Poland
- the Remuh Synagogue and historic cemetery dating to the 16th century
- the Tempel Synagogue, known for its decorative interior
- the Isaac Synagogue, an impressive 17th-century religious building

From historic district to cultural hotspot
During World War II, Jewish residents were forced into the ghetto in nearby Podgórze and the district fell into decline. In the late 20th century Kazimierz began to transform again, becoming one of Kraków’s most creative and vibrant neighborhoods.
Today the district is known for its cafés, restaurants, street art and cultural events. The Jewish Culture Festival, held every summer, attracts visitors from around the world and celebrates the traditions and heritage that shaped the district.
