Mariacka Street Gdańsk – The City's Most Charming Walk

Discover Gdańsk's famous Amber Street, where historic townhouses, ornate terraces and centuries of history create one of Poland's most beautiful walks.

Instead of rushing through Gdańsk's Old Town, slow down and take a walk along Mariacka Street — one of the city's most iconic and atmospheric places. Stretching just 185 metres, this narrow cobbled street connects St. Mary's Basilica with the historic St. Mary's Gate overlooking the Motława River.

For more than 700 years, Mariacka Street has welcomed merchants, craftsmen and travelers. Today it is famous for its amber galleries, beautifully restored townhouses and unique architectural details that make it unlike any other street in Poland.

From Medieval Trade to Amber Street

Mariacka Street began to develop during the 14th century, when Gdańsk was emerging as one of the most important trading ports on the Baltic Sea. Wealthy merchants and skilled craftsmen settled here, building elegant townhouses decorated with carved façades, decorative ironwork and impressive stone terraces.

Although the street suffered extensive destruction during World War II, much of its historic character was carefully restored using archival photographs, architectural drawings and surviving decorative elements. Reconstruction continued for several decades, transforming Mariacka into one of the finest examples of post-war conservation in Poland.

Today, the street is known as Gdańsk's Amber Street. The city has been one of Europe's leading centres of Baltic amber craftsmanship for centuries, and many galleries along Mariacka continue this tradition by showcasing jewellery, sculptures and works of art created from fossilised tree resin.

Look Up — The Street's Hidden Details

One of Mariacka Street's most distinctive features is its historic przedproża — elevated stone terraces built in front of many townhouses. They were much more than decorative entrances. Because medieval Gdańsk stood on low, damp ground, houses were built above street level, while the terraces became elegant transitional spaces used in everyday life and for welcoming visitors. Today, they remain one of the city's most recognizable architectural symbols.

Another detail worth searching for is the collection of carved rzygacze — gargoyle-shaped rain spouts designed to carry water away from the buildings. Each has its own unique appearance, featuring animals, mythical creatures or fantastic faces. One of the most famous is Pomuchel, a gargoyle named after the Kashubian word for Baltic cod, which has become one of Mariacka Street's best-known curiosities.

Flower-filled windows, decorative railings and centuries-old brick façades complete the picture, giving every townhouse its own individual character.

More to Discover Nearby

Mariacka Street is also one of the best starting points for exploring the historic centre of Gdańsk. At its western end stands St. Mary's Basilica, one of the largest brick churches in the world, while the eastern end leads through St. Mary's Gate towards the Motława waterfront.

Right beside the gate stands the impressive Naturalists' House, now home to the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk. Its elegant Renaissance façade and slender tower survived the destruction of World War II and remain among the most distinctive landmarks on the waterfront. Visitors can also climb the museum tower for panoramic views over the Old Town and the Motława River.

As you continue along the river, you'll soon reach the famous Medieval Crane (Żuraw), Długie Pobrzeże and many of Gdańsk's most recognizable waterfront landmarks.

Seven Centuries of Stories

One final detail is easy to miss. At Mariacka 1, closest to St. Mary's Basilica, stands the oldest surviving residential house on the street, dating back to 1451. It is one of the very few buildings that survived the destruction of 1945, making it a remarkable witness to more than five centuries of Gdańsk's history.

Whether you come for the amber, the architecture or the hidden details carved into every façade, Mariacka Street offers much more than a beautiful walk. It is a place where medieval trade, craftsmanship and careful post-war restoration come together to tell the story of historic Gdańsk.
