Encircling Kraków’s historic center is Planty Krakowskie, a leafy park that follows the route of the former medieval city walls. This green belt forms a natural boundary around the Old Town, offering a peaceful contrast to the surrounding streets and historic architecture. Today it is one of the city’s most beloved public spaces, where locals and visitors stroll beneath tree-lined paths while passing monuments, fountains, and quiet gardens.

For nearly two centuries, Planty has served as Kraków’s open-air promenade. Walking its shaded paths reveals not only a relaxing urban park, but also a subtle journey through the city’s past.

From City Walls to Urban Garden

Planty Park was created between 1822 and 1830 after Kraków’s medieval fortifications and moats were dismantled. The transformation was part of a broader urban vision that replaced defensive structures with a landscaped promenade surrounding the Old Town. Today only a few remnants of the original walls remain, most notably St. Florian’s Gate and the nearby Barbican, which still mark the former entrance to the city.

Stretching for about 4 kilometres and covering more than 21 hectares, Planty consists of a series of interconnected gardens arranged around the historic center. Tree-lined avenues, small lawns, and decorative flowerbeds create a calm and elegant landscape where chestnuts, lindens, maples, and ash trees provide shade throughout the warmer months.

Walking through Planty also reveals numerous statues and memorials dedicated to figures from Polish history and culture. Among them are monuments honoring Nicolaus Copernicus, Jan Matejko, Queen Jadwiga, and King Władysław Jagiełło, each reflecting Kraków’s deep historical heritage.

The park’s layout mirrors the surrounding districts of the Old Town. Individual sections of Planty take their names from nearby landmarks such as Wawel, Uniwersytet, Stradom, and Pałac Sztuki, subtly guiding visitors through the city’s historic geography.

Visiting Planty

Planty forms a continuous park surrounding the Old Town and is accessible from almost every street leading out of the historic center. The paths are open 24 hours a day and are popular for walking, jogging, and cycling.

The park changes character with the seasons. Spring and summer bring dense greenery and flowering gardens, while autumn colours transform the alleys into one of the most picturesque walking routes in Kraków. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the most peaceful times to explore the park.
