St. Adalbert’s Church – Kraków Old Town

One of Krakow’s oldest churches, hidden in plain sight on the Main Market Square — a quiet witness to over a thousand years of history.

Step into one of Krakow’s oldest and most enduring spiritual landmarks at St. Adalbert’s Church (Kościół św. Wojciecha) — a modest yet powerful stone church quietly anchored in the south-eastern corner of Main Market Square, where urban life meets a millennium of history. Standing here, you can almost hear echoes of ancient sermons and feel the layered presence of time in the very stones beneath your feet.

St. Adalbert’s Church predates the formal layout of Krakow’s Main Square by nearly two centuries, making it one of the earliest surviving stone churches in Poland and a living testament to the city’s origins.

History and significance

The roots of this sanctuary reach back to the turn of the first millennium, shortly after the martyrdom of Saint Adalbert (Św. Wojciech) in 997. According to tradition, the missionary preached near this spot while traveling from Hungary to Prussia — and it was here that the first sacred structure was erected in his honor.

Originally built of wood in the 11th century, the early church was soon replaced by a stone Romanesque building around the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century — of which the sturdy foundations remain visible today.

As Krakow grew into a thriving medieval hub, the church remained in place, even as the Main Market Square was established in 1257 around it. Over the centuries, the building was modified — Baroque elements were added in the 17th and 18th centuries, including a dome and new entrance, yet the Romanesque core continues to anchor its identity.

Beneath the surface, the church tells an even older story: the Archaeological Museum in Krakow has transformed the underground area into an exhibition that reveals ancient floors, rubble, and relics from early phases of the building and the Market Square itself — showing how the ground has risen and shifted over centuries.
