St. Mary's Basilica Gdańsk – The Heart of Historic Gdańsk

Discover one of the world's largest brick churches, home to a magnificent astronomical clock and panoramic city views.

For more than 500 years, one building has defined Gdańsk's skyline. Long before modern skyscrapers, sailors approaching one of the Baltic's busiest ports could already see the towering silhouette of St. Mary's Basilica. Built over nearly 160 years, it became a symbol of the city's wealth, ambition and faith during the Middle Ages.

Today, the basilica is considered one of the world's largest brick churches, welcoming visitors with its vast Gothic interior, priceless works of art and one of the best viewpoints in Gdańsk.

Built by Generations

Construction of today's basilica began on 25 March 1343 and was completed on 28 July 1502. Few medieval buildings took so long to build. Over 159 years, generations of craftsmen worked on the church, knowing they would never see the finished masterpiece.

As Gdańsk flourished through Baltic trade and the Hanseatic League, the church expanded alongside the city. Today it measures 105.2 metres in length and 66.2 metres across the transept. Its soaring Gothic vaults rise almost 30 metres above the floor, while the vast interior is supported by 26 free-standing pillars, creating one of Europe's largest open brick church spaces.

Treasures Hidden Inside

The basilica is far more than its impressive architecture. Inside you'll discover one of Poland's finest collections of medieval sacred art.

The church's greatest masterpiece is the extraordinary Astronomical Clock, built by Hans Düringer between 1464 and 1470. Standing over 14 metres tall, it is one of Europe's largest medieval astronomical clocks. Besides showing the time, it also displays the calendar, zodiac signs, phases of the Moon and other astronomical information.

Look for the elegant Beautiful Madonna of Gdańsk, the moving Pietà from around 1410, impressive Gothic altars and the basilica's 31 historic chapels, each preserving a different piece of the church's long history.

405 Steps to the Best View

If you're comfortable with a climb, don't miss the basilica's tower. Reaching the viewing terrace requires climbing 405 steps, but the panorama is one of the finest in the city.

From the top, you'll see the colorful rooftops of Gdańsk, the Motława River, the Crane, the shipyards and, on clear days, even the Baltic Sea. It's also the best place to appreciate the enormous scale of the church rising above the Old Town.

A Witness to History

St. Mary's Basilica has witnessed almost every chapter of Gdańsk's history — from the city's medieval prosperity and Hanseatic trade to the devastation of World War II. Before the fighting reached Gdańsk, many of its most valuable treasures were removed for safekeeping, allowing them to survive the war and return during the careful restoration of the church.

Today, the basilica remains both an active place of worship and one of the city's most important landmarks, welcoming visitors from around the world.

Did You Notice?

Although its exterior looks surprisingly simple, the basilica hides an astonishingly vast interior. Supported by 26 free-standing pillars and illuminated by 41 large windows, it demonstrates just how ambitious medieval brick architecture could become.

Continue Exploring

Stepping outside the basilica, you'll find yourself in the heart of historic Gdańsk. Wander along Mariacka Street to discover amber workshops and beautifully restored townhouses, visit the Neptune Fountain and Artus Court, or continue towards the Crane (Żuraw) and the picturesque Motława River waterfront.

Together, these landmarks tell the story of Gdańsk's rise as one of the greatest trading cities on the Baltic Sea.
