The Barbican (Barbakan) is one of Kraków’s most recognizable medieval landmarks — a circular Gothic fortress located near St. Florian’s Gate at the entrance to the historic Royal Road.

Built at the end of the 15th century, the fortress once formed part of Kraków’s defensive system, protecting the northern approach to the city. Today, its thick brick walls, towers, and distinctive circular shape remain one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in Europe.

A fortress at the entrance to the city

The Barbican was constructed between 1498 and 1499 during the reign of King Jan Olbracht. It was designed to defend the weakest section of Kraków’s fortifications — the area not protected by natural wetlands or rivers.

Originally connected to St. Florian’s Gate by a fortified passage, the structure stood outside the city walls and was surrounded by a moat with drawbridges.

The fortress is known for:

  • massive defensive walls over 3 meters thick
  • seven watchtowers and dozens of loopholes
  • its circular Gothic design
  • its location at the beginning of Kraków’s Royal Road

One of Europe’s best-preserved barbicans

During the 19th century, most of Kraków’s medieval walls were demolished as the city expanded. The Barbican survived thanks to early conservation efforts and became one of the few remaining parts of the original defensive system.

Today, the fortress functions as a historical monument and museum space. Seasonal exhibitions and cultural events are occasionally held inside the structure, while the surrounding area remains one of the busiest walking routes in the Old Town.

The contrast between the medieval fortress and the green surroundings of Planty Park makes this area especially distinctive.
