The Crane Gdańsk – Europe's Largest Medieval Port Crane

Discover Gdańsk's iconic Crane, a medieval port crane and city gate that powered one of Europe's greatest trading ports for centuries.

Standing proudly on the banks of the Motława River, the Crane (Żuraw) has become one of Gdańsk's greatest symbols. For centuries, this remarkable structure welcomed merchant ships arriving from across Europe, helping transform the city into one of the Baltic's most important trading ports.

More than just a landmark, the Crane was one of the greatest engineering achievements of medieval Europe. Built nearly 600 years ago, it combined the functions of a port crane, a city gate and part of Gdańsk's defensive walls — a unique combination that survives nowhere else on such a scale.

Powering Gdańsk's Golden Age

The first wooden crane stood here in the 14th century, but it was destroyed by fire in 1442. Almost immediately, work began on a new brick structure, completed between 1442 and 1444. The building that visitors admire today has remained one of the defining landmarks of Gdańsk ever since.

Its greatest importance came during the 16th and 17th centuries, often called Gdańsk's Golden Age. At that time, the city was one of Europe's busiest trading ports, exporting enormous quantities of grain, timber and other goods across the Baltic Sea. The Crane became an essential part of everyday port life, loading cargo, installing ship masts and helping merchant vessels prepare for long voyages.

Three Buildings in One

Unlike ordinary harbour cranes, Żuraw performed several important roles at once.

It served as a powerful port crane, capable of lifting cargo weighing up to 2 tonnes. At the same time, it functioned as one of Gdańsk's water gates, allowing controlled access between the city and the harbour. Its massive brick towers also formed part of the city's medieval defensive walls, helping protect one of the wealthiest ports on the Baltic.

The crane itself was powered entirely by human strength. Inside the building were two enormous wooden treadwheels, each measuring around 6 metres in diameter. Workers walked inside these giant wheels, much like modern hamster wheels, generating enough force to lift heavy cargo or raise tall ship masts.

This ingenious mechanism made Żuraw one of the most advanced pieces of port engineering in medieval Europe.

Inside the Crane Today

Today, the Crane forms part of the National Maritime Museum, where visitors can explore both the restored medieval structure and modern interactive exhibitions.

Inside, you can see the original lifting mechanism, learn how medieval merchants traded goods arriving from across Europe, discover how ships were loaded and repaired, and explore the daily life of one of the busiest ports on the Baltic Sea. The exhibition also explains how Gdańsk became a leading member of the Hanseatic League, the powerful alliance of trading cities that dominated northern European commerce for centuries.

Following heavy wartime damage in 1945, the Crane underwent careful reconstruction, preserving one of Poland's most valuable examples of medieval industrial architecture.

More Than a Landmark

The Crane stands in the heart of Gdańsk's historic waterfront, just a short walk from many of the city's most famous attractions. Within minutes you can reach Mariacka Street, St. Mary's Basilica, the Neptune Fountain, the Long Market and the scenic promenades along the Motława River.

For hundreds of years, Żuraw welcomed merchants, sailors and travellers arriving by water. Today, it continues to welcome visitors from around the world, offering a fascinating glimpse into the maritime history that shaped Gdańsk into one of Europe's greatest trading cities.
