University of Warsaw Library Rooftop Garden
A modern library in Warsaw featuring one of Europe’s most impressive rooftop gardens, blending architecture, greenery, and panoramic city views.
Step into the Biblioteka Uniwersytecka w Warszawie — one of the most unique buildings in the city, where modern architecture meets nature in an unexpected way. Located in Powiśle, right by the Vistula River, it’s not just a place for books, but one of Warsaw’s most impressive green spaces.
Opened in its current form in 1999, the building quickly became a symbol of contemporary Warsaw. Covered in glass, steel, and greenery, it blends culture and nature into a single experience — and hides one of the most surprising attractions on its roof.
A library that grows into a garden
At first glance, BUW stands out with its distinctive facade covered in climbing plants and symbolic inscriptions. Inside, it houses vast academic collections, but the real highlight begins outside — where the building transforms into a living landscape.
The rooftop garden, opened in 2002, is one of the largest and most iconic roof gardens in Europe. Spread across multiple levels, it was designed as an extension of the building itself, creating a seamless connection between architecture and nature.
Key highlights of the space include:
- one of the largest rooftop gardens in Europe
- a unique blend of architecture, greenery, and urban views
Space and atmosphere
The garden is divided into two main parts — a lower garden with water features and open spaces, and an upper garden located around 16 meters above ground, offering panoramic views of Warsaw. Paths, bridges, and pergolas connect different zones, creating a layered and immersive walking experience.
What makes this place stand out is its design. The rooftop is divided into color-themed sections — gold, silver, crimson, and green — each filled with carefully selected plants that change throughout the seasons. From here, you can look out over the Vistula, the city skyline, and even peek into the library through glass panels built into the roof.
Despite being in the middle of the city, the atmosphere feels surprisingly calm. It’s a place where people come to read, take photos, meet friends, or simply sit among greenery — often forgetting they’re standing on top of a library.

Useful information for visitors

Why visit Biblioteka Uniwersytecka w Warszawie?
