Warsaw Uprising Mound — A Memorial Built from the Ruins of the City

A symbolic hill built from the ruins of post-war Warsaw, offering panoramic city views, memorial pathways and one of the capital’s most unique green spaces.

Step into one of Warsaw’s most powerful urban landscapes — a hill built from the ruins of a destroyed city. Rising above Mokotów, the Warsaw Uprising Mound blends memory, architecture and wild nature into a place that feels both reflective and unexpectedly alive.

What many visitors see today as a peaceful green hill was once known simply as “the rubble dump.” From the late 1940s until the 1960s, debris from ruined Warsaw was transported here, gradually forming a 35-meter artificial hill above the flat riverside terrain. Over time, nature slowly reclaimed the area, creating a dense, untamed urban forest growing directly from the remains of the city.

A landscape shaped by memory and nature

The site carries layers of history far beyond a traditional memorial. In 1994, Warsaw Uprising veteran and architect Eugeniusz Ajewski “Kotwa” recognized the symbolic meaning hidden within the hill and transformed its identity by placing the iconic Fighting Poland monument at the summit. His vision was simple but radical — to create not only a place of remembrance, but also a public space connected to everyday life.

That idea became the foundation for the award-winning revitalization completed decades later. The redesigned park received the Grand Prix in the Warsaw Architectural Award and was also recognized for its ecological solutions and public space design. Instead of erasing the raw character of the hill, the project embraced its imperfections, allowing history and nature to exist side by side.

Key highlights include:

  • panoramic viewpoints overlooking Warsaw
  • the monumental Hour “W” Avenue leading to the summit

Ruins transformed into architecture

One of the most fascinating aspects of the park is how rubble itself became part of the architecture. During construction, materials uncovered beneath the hill were preserved and reused on-site. Fragments of bricks, tiles and destroyed buildings were transformed into contemporary “gruzobeton” structures — a modern reinterpretation of post-war recycled concrete once widely used during the reconstruction of Warsaw.

Throughout the park, traces of the former city remain visible inside retaining walls, gabions and pathways. Some sections resemble abstract ruins slowly being absorbed back into nature. Moss, wild grasses and pioneer plants grow directly across surfaces made from reclaimed debris, creating an atmosphere unlike any other public park in Warsaw.

The landscape design also works with natural ecological processes rather than against them. Rainwater retention systems, biodiversity zones and wild meadow species inspired by plants that originally grew on Warsaw’s post-war ruins allow the park to feel organic instead of artificially designed.

Useful information for visitors

Key information for planning your visit:

  • By public transport: accessible by bus connections from central Warsaw and Mokotów
  • By bike: connected to scenic cycling routes near the Vistula area
  • By car: limited parking available near Bartycka Street
  • Opening hours / tickets / seasonality: open year-round and free to visit

Few places in Warsaw combine history, landscape architecture and ecology so naturally. More than a viewpoint or memorial, this is a space where the city’s past remains physically present — not hidden beneath the ground, but woven directly into the landscape itself.
