Warsaw Uprising Museum
An immersive Warsaw museum dedicated to the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, featuring multimedia exhibitions and authentic wartime artifacts.
Step into the Warsaw Uprising Museum — one of the most important historical sites in Warsaw, dedicated to the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and the people who fought for the city’s freedom during World War II. Located in the Wola district, it combines authentic history with modern storytelling, creating an experience that feels both educational and deeply personal.
Opened in 2004 on the 60th anniversary of the uprising, the institution was created inside a former tram power station and quickly became one of Warsaw’s most visited cultural landmarks. The exhibition focuses not only on military operations, but also on the everyday reality of civilians living in a city consumed by war.
A story that shaped Warsaw
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944, when the Polish Home Army launched an operation against German occupation, hoping to liberate the capital before the arrival of Soviet forces. Planned as a short-term action, the fighting lasted 63 days and ended with the near-total destruction of Warsaw.
Inside, history is presented through archival photographs, personal letters, sound recordings, and reconstructed spaces inspired by wartime streets and underground passages. Instead of traditional display cases, visitors move through immersive environments designed to recreate the tension, uncertainty, and emotions of occupied Warsaw.
Key highlights include:
- immersive exhibition dedicated to the 1944 Warsaw Uprising
- authentic artifacts, historical footage, and reconstructed wartime spaces
Space and atmosphere
The industrial architecture gives the entire space a raw and intense atmosphere. Narrow corridors, dim lighting, and ambient sounds make the experience feel cinematic while still grounded in real historical accounts.
One of the most recognizable elements inside is the replica of the B-24 Liberator bomber suspended above visitors, symbolizing Allied support missions carried out during the uprising. The collection also includes original insurgent items, underground printing materials, and moving civilian testimonies that reveal what daily survival looked like during the war.
Outside, the Memory Wall commemorates thousands of insurgents who lost their lives during the fighting. Every year on August 1st at 5 PM — known in Warsaw as the “W Hour” — sirens echo throughout the city, and traffic, public transport, and pedestrians stop for a moment of silence in remembrance of the uprising.

Useful information for visitors
Key information for planning your visit:
- By public transport: accessible via bus 106, tram lines 1, 7, 9, 22, 24, and 25, as well as Warsaw Metro Line 2
- By car: the museum does not have its own parking for private cars, but paid street parking and private parking facilities are available nearby, including Warsaw Spire and Jaktorowska Street parking areas
- Opening hours / tickets: opening hours may vary during holidays and special periods; individual visitors can usually enter without prior reservation during regular opening hours
Visiting this place offers more than a history lesson — it provides insight into the events that shaped modern Warsaw and the resilience that still defines the city today.
