Wieliczka Salt Mine – Underground Wonder near Kraków

Step into a subterranean world where centuries of mining, art, and legend come alive in a unique underground landscape.

Step into one of Poland’s most extraordinary underground worlds at the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside Kraków. This remarkable labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and chapels carved deep in rock salt has fascinated visitors for centuries.

Descending beneath the surface reveals a hidden landscape shaped by generations of miners. Salt walls, sculptures and underground halls create a place where engineering, art and history meet in a truly unique setting.

A medieval mine beneath the earth

The Wieliczka Salt Mine dates back to the 13th century and remained in continuous operation until 1996. Over more than 700 years miners carved over 300 kilometers of tunnels and more than 2,000 chambers, transforming the underground rock into a complex world of corridors and halls.

Today a section of the mine is open to visitors as a historic and cultural monument. Walking through the underground passages reveals salt sculptures, mining equipment and carefully preserved chambers that illustrate the daily life and traditions of generations of miners.

The most remarkable highlights of the mine include:

  • the spectacular Chapel of St. Kinga, carved entirely from salt
  • underground chambers decorated with sculptures and reliefs
  • historic mining corridors showing traditional extraction methods
  • an extensive network of tunnels reaching deep below the surface

Art, legends and underground chapels

One of the most impressive spaces in the mine is the Chapel of St. Kinga, an underground church carved entirely from salt by miners. Its chandeliers, altars and sculptures are all made from the same mineral, creating a breathtaking space used today for concerts and special ceremonies.

The mine is also surrounded by legends connected with Princess Kinga, who according to tradition threw her engagement ring into a Hungarian salt mine. When salt was later discovered in Wieliczka, the ring was said to appear in the first block of salt brought to the surface.
