Zabierzów Quarry & Skała Kmity Near Kraków

A former limestone quarry near Kraków surrounded by turquoise water, forest trails and the legendary Skała Kmity hidden in the Rudawa Valley.

Just 20 minutes from Kraków, turquoise water surrounded by white limestone cliffs suddenly appears between forests and rocky hills like something completely out of place.

Zabierzów is one of the most interesting nature spots west of Kraków, popular for short hikes, cycling routes and quiet afternoon walks. What was once an industrial extraction site has gradually transformed into a scenic area filled with walking paths, viewpoints and forest trails.

Limestone cliffs & the legend of Skała Kmity

The area operated between 1922 and 1992, when limestone was extracted here for chalk production. Two years later, part of the excavation was flooded, creating the lake visible today. After revitalization, wooden promenades and walking routes were added around the water.

But the most famous landmark nearby is Skała Kmity — a 25-meter limestone cliff connected to a local legend dating back to the 16th century. According to the story, knight Stanisław Kmita threw himself from the rock after a tragic love story involving Olimpia Bonerówna. A cross still stands at the top today.

What to explore nearby

  • Skała Kmity — limestone cliff overlooking the Rudawa Valley
  • Dolina Rudawy — scenic valley with forest walking trails
  • Las Zabierzowski — cycling and hiking routes through Jurassic landscapes
  • Wooden promenade — viewpoints over the turquoise lake
  • Radar “Zapałka” — iconic radar tower visible above the forest near Balice airport

The area is especially popular for short nature trips because everything sits close together — forest paths, viewpoints, limestone cliffs and easy walking routes can all be explored within a single afternoon.

One important thing to know: despite the beach-like atmosphere, swimming is not allowed in the lake.

Useful information for visitors

  • By public transport: trains and buses connect Kraków with Zabierzów
  • By bike: cycling routes run through Las Zabierzowski and Dolina Rudawy
  • By car: parking available near hiking trail entrances
  • Opening hours / tickets: the area is free and accessible year-round

It is one of those places that feels much further from Kraków than it actually is.
