Zakrzówek – Turquoise Oasis

Nestled in southern Krakow, Zakrzówek dazzles visitors with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and dramatic limestone cliffs – a hidden oasis right in the heart of the city. Once a bustling limestone quarry, this place has transformed into one of Krakow’s most stunning natural retreats, blending history, nature, and recreation into a single turquoise paradise.

Zakrzówek Reservoir was created in 1990 after the flooding of the quarry, which had operated here since the Middle Ages. The area has a rich history: it was used during World War II, and Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, once worked in the quarry. Today, Zakrzówek is one of Poland’s finest examples of post-industrial revitalization, combining historical heritage with modern recreational space.

The Zakrzówek Park spans over 50 hectares, and together with adjacent areas, nearly 100 hectares of greenery. It’s the perfect place for walking, jogging, or cycling. The park features marked running paths with stretching points and water stations, viewpoints, workout zones, walking trails, and picnic and barbecue areas. Modern floating platforms and pools on the reservoir allow safe swimming for both children and adults, with water depths ranging from 40 cm to 3.5 meters. The bathing area operates seasonally, from June to September, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Zakrzówek is also a diver’s paradise. Visibility underwater reaches 10–15 meters, and the reservoir is filled with sunken attractions: car wrecks, boats, a bus, and even a granite plaque commemorating John Paul II. The Kraken Diving Centre provides professional courses and guided dives, ensuring safety for both beginners and experienced divers.

The park’s natural environment is as impressive as its waters. Geological diversity – rocks, various soil types, and terrain – creates habitats for protected amphibians and reptiles, such as the smooth newt, natterjack toad, and grass snake. Xerothermic grasslands host rare plant species, while bees, butterflies, and birds add life and color to the area. Informational boards remind visitors to respect the ecosystem and preserve its unique beauty.

The surrounding area is equally enchanting: the “Skały Twardowskiego” forest with picturesque meadows, viewpoints overlooking the Vistula River and Wolski Forest, sunbathing spots, and winter sledding areas. Zakrzówek is a place for families, sports enthusiasts, and anyone seeking active relaxation in nature.
