Europe’s First Modern Constitution

Adopted on May 3, 1791, the Constitution of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was Europe’s first modern constitution and the world’s second-oldest written national constitution, after that of the United States. It introduced major political reforms, strengthened the separation of powers, and sought to modernize the state during the Age of Enlightenment.
